Nurses Week Celebrated
Nurses from all over the world celebrate the
birth anniversary of Ms. Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern
nursing, every year as International Nurses Week from 12th to 18th May to
commemorate her contribution, dedication, and devotion towards nursing
profession as well as entire ailing humanity.
Nurses at PGIMER, Chandigarh, are also celebrating her birth anniversary
from 12th to 18th May. The theme chosen for this year is ‘Delivering
Quality, Serving Communities: Nurses Leading Chronic Care.’ The function
started with lamp lighting by Prof. K K Talwar, The Former Director, PGIMER,
Chandigarh, Chief Guest on the occasion. Prof. Talwar appreciated the
nursing care given to the patients by nurses of Nehru Hospital and paid
rich tributes to Florence Nightingale, founder of Modern Nursing
Profession. He congratulated all nursing fraternity on inauguration of
International Nurses Week and advised the nurses on specialization of care
like neonatology OT, cardiac nursing, for which he emphasized that nurses
should go for in service education programmes.
Prof. A K Gupta, Medical Superintendent-cum-Head, Department of
Hospital Administration, also praised the hard work, dedication and
sincerity of nurses. While emphasizing that even the best can be improved
Prof. Gupta called upon all nurses to improve the standards of aseptic
techniques and other aspects of patient care. He paid rich tributes to
Florence Nightingale and inspired nurses to emulate her.
Mrs. Amarjit Nafra, Nursing Superintendent, introduced the theme
and highlighted the activities to be carried out over the week in the
Institute such as hand washing technique, seminar on role of nurse in
chronic care, personal and environmental hygiene and self care by the
individual in chronic sickness. She encouraged all nurses to participate
actively in all the programmes and make this theme a reality so that best
health services can be provided.

On
the occasion of International Nurses Day, a colorful prize distribution
ceremony was held at NINE, PGIMER, Chandigarh. The Chief Guest for the
occasion was Prof. K.K. Talwar, The Former Director, PGIMER. Officer Incharge of
NINE, Dr. Meenu Singh along with the deemed faculty of NINE were present
for the occasion. The programme was hosted by Dr. Sandhya Ghai. The
competitions for which the prizes were awarded- Calligraphy, Photography,
Card making, Dancing, Singing, Debate Extempore & Fabric Painting. Al the
eight classes participated with zeal and enthusiasm. It was a tough task
for the judges to come to a conclusion. Post-Basic B.Sc. Nursing 1st year
students emerged as the heroes of the occasion winning maximum number of
prizes. They won 18 prizes followed by Basic Nursing 3rd year students
who won 5 prizes. Prof. K.K. Talwar gave away the prizes to the winners
and encouraged the students to keep up the performance. A token of love
was given to Prof. K.K. Talwar in the form of handmade fabric painting,
painted by Ms. Bidisha Basu (1st year Post-Basic students). She also was
awarded best performer for the occasion as she had seven prizes to her
credit. The programme was concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Karobi
Das.
