Inauguration of Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) Lab.

at PGI on 25th January, 2012

Nucleic acid testing (NAT) Lab. in the Department of Transfusion Medicine at PGI was inaugurated by Shri K.K.Sharma, Advisor to the Administrator, U.T., Chandigarh. The inaugural function was presided over by Prof.Y.K.Chawla, Director, PGIMER, Chandigarh.

NAT is the most sensitive and state-of-the-art testing for improving blood safety from transfusion transmissible viral infections – HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. It detects the presence of DNA or RNA of the virus. Currently used ELISA tests are serology based and detect either antibodies to the virus or the antigens. ELISA tests have a significantly long window period i.e. the time from which infection enters the body and can be detected by the tests. For HIV, the ELISA window period is three weeks and with NAT it reduces to less than 6 days. For HBV 38 day ELISA window period reduces to three weeks with NAT. For HCV the window period shortens from 70  days to 5 days with NAT. This is the first NAT facility for blood screening in the region and has been set up at a cost of around one crore.
