Dr. Yogesh Chawla has
made immense contribution to the development of Hepatology. The
Department of Hepatology has been the only one of its kind in the
country till a few years ago. Its recognition has grown over the
years both nationally and internationally by the joint teamwork of his
colleagues in the department. Most of the eminent Hepatologists of the
world have visited the Department over these years and highly
commended the work being done by the Department especially in the
field of Budd-Chiari Syndrome, Non-cirrhotic Portal Fibrosis,
Extrahepatic Portal Vein Obstruction, Hepatic Encephalopathy, Ascites
Hepatocellular Carcinoma and Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. Dr.
Chawla and his team started the first D.M. (Hepatology) programme in
the country in the year 2008. This is being now emulated in a few
other centres in the country. The team started the first Liver
Intensive Care Unit in a Government Hospital a model being considered
by other centres in the country. The team also initiated the first
Cadaveric Liver Transplant Programme at the Postgraduate Institute of
Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh on 15th April, 2011. The
Department has successfully done 10 joint PGI-AIIMS Current
Perspective in Liver Diseases "Single Theme Meetings" which has been
very popular in this region.
He has published more than 340 papers in National as well as
International Journals and has contributed 26 chapters in various Text
Books.
